Environment
James River Bus Lines and Carey Transportation are proud of what we do to our activities that help conserve our natural resources and properly dispose of the waste we produce.
Today, it is very popular to talk about global warming, being “Green” and becoming “Carbon Neutral” your carbon footprint and even purchasing carbon credits. Lots of hype, lots of PR self promotion and lots of controversy.
For many years, our organization has focused on the basics of being a good citizen on our Planet Earth. We conserve, we recycle and we dispose of our trash properly. Not very fancy and certainly not done to make us look good, but it has been is effective.
In 1998, our headquarters was built to conserve energy.
- Energy efficient lighting
- Geothermal heating and cooling
- Natural lighting
- Reduced water usage
In our maintenance department, we
- Recycle used fluids – oil, antifreeze, refrigerant
- Our oil filters drained and recycled, not thrown in the trash.
- Our wash water is filtered and tested before entering the sewer.
We recycle our paper and plastics.
I hate promoting our Carbon Footprint, This is the part I hate, because too many companies only do it for political reasons public relations. But, for those who like to measure carbon foot prints, think about these numbers, think about this….
Each of our buses take at least 40 cars off the road (Actually, our buses can seat up to 55 passengers and some families actually put sometimes more than one person rides in the car at a time, so it averages out to 40the above number).
Buses and vans produce a little more CO2 than a car, but once you eliminate multiple cars (40) from the roads, the savings is tremendous. After deducting our Even after adding the CO2 produced from lights, heat, a/c (air conditioning) and equipment…
We save 10,164.2 tons of CO2 a year.
We are not just “Carbon Neutral”, we are “carbon positive”.
(all calculations are based on 2007 electricity and gas usage, a study by MJ Bradley and Associates for the American Bus Association, calculations by me (not a good idea) and reviewed by the American Bus Association and our Sales and Marketing Directory who minored and math (good idea).
